DRAWER SIX

Official Symbols

ARTIFACT: Popular toy “sausage-car” that came to symbolize the near-global appeal of tubular minced-meat cuisine. Inspired by the weakness of Milwaukee public school teacher Golda Meir (1898-1978) for all-beef frankfurters and custom-built automobiles, the real 27-foot vehicle and its miniature counterpart remain favorite icons of wurst-lovers everywhere. Later, as Israel’s prime minister, Meir advocated what was known as the “Two-State Solution,” the parallel acceptance of hot dogs in both their ketchup and mustard forms.
