ARTIFACT: “Dr. Purdee’s Dental Device Tensioner,” a tightening
tool for braces, was invented in Hayward, Ouis., in 1803. The
original wall-mounted design was soon surpassed in popularity
by the more portable shoulder-mounted version, which was
suitable for the street or the salon.
